Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students have started basic ballet through the generosity of Ballet and Beyond NYC. We have gotten free classes, some leotards, and some ballet shoes but we need barres to have a real quality ballet class experience that trains our students for summer programs, auditions, and high school dance programs! We need more sizes of shoes as well to help get everyone a pair of shoes that fits them to allow them to get used to wearing ballet shoes while dancing!

Students at HGMS have taken to dance fast.

With the help of donations we have grown our program in the past 2 years to a full-time dance major within school, along with 3 after-school dance days, and more demand for further programming. Many students have participated in summer programs such as Alvin Ailey and Dance Theater of Harlem.

To prepare students for summer program and high school performing arts program auditions, we need to strengthen our ballet skills. Ballet and Beyond has been an amazing partner in this, hosting our students at their space several classes a week for free, as well as sending an teaching artist to our school to work with students. In order to ensure the continued success of our program (wherein 40 students are currently enrolled in ballet!), we need barres and shoes so that students are prepared for ballet classes they will take and audition for outside of our school.
