My Students

Our middle school is a truly international Philadelphia public school with students from all walks of life. Students mostly travel by public transportation to this Northeast Philly neighborhood school, but their families come from too many different countries and communities to mention!

Baldi loves to celebrates its diversity, but faces a challenge in effectively communicating with families of such various languages.

Baldi's students speak 30 different languages- in school! At home, parents struggle to connect with what is happening in the classroom due to diverse language barriers.

My Project

This iPad will serve two hugely important roles in my students' classroom:

1.

Communication with Parents~ especially those who do not speak English as a first language.

Immediate feedback for parents is a huge factor in encouraging students both in and out of the classroom and helping parents be a positive and informed support of their student at home. This will be my second year teaching at my school, and my biggest goal is to empower parents to support their child's achievement. Technology, especially the educational app "Class Dojo" uses avatars to show a student's daily progress, helping parents to stay informed regardless of their language proficiency.

2. Baldi Robotics Programming for Lego robotics.

I also co-chair the rapidly growing robotics program, where students program LEGO Mindstorm robots to complete real-world tasks and compete at the University of Pennsylvania as a culminating project. We have secured many new robot units, but are held back by slow performing laptops that need to be plugged in to be charged. Having an iPad will allow us to program in an on-the-spot way. Our goal is to win the competition at Penn this year. Please help us to make this happen!
