My Students

Chemistry can be a wonderful way for students to apply their creativity in an exciting problem solving arena. Enrollment in our chemistry classes has increased dramatically, and each student needs a hands-on experience to demonstrate the concepts that we learn in class.

My students are sophomores, juniors, and seniors in a large, urban, public high school in New Hampshire.

Although we have a functional facility, our city has systematically cut funding for the schools. This has increased class sizes and decreased the resources available to teachers for materials in their classrooms. Additionally, more students are seeking science courses in their schedules, and we have been straining to provide enough supplies.

My Project

The majority of people rely strongly on their visual learning skills, and my students are no different. I have found that if learners can see and experience chemistry first-hand, their understanding of difficult and complex topics is greatly increased. Because of this, my students would benefit fantastically from this balance! This balance would allow them to perform experiments and make accurate scientific measurements consistent with the topics that we study in class. We have requested an electronic balance to better facilitate a variety of lab activities during the year. With this balance, we will be better equipped to explore and expand the experiments that we can attempt as well!

Many people are intimidated by chemistry for a variety of reasons.

If this lab equipment can help dissolve that fear in one aspect of the class, the confidence that the students will build can be applied to other areas of the course and their lives. We may give someone the confidence to pursue a life as a rocket scientist or genetic engineer. Our futures may be in their hands!
