The first grade teachers and students are working on balancing both addition and subtraction. The math balances will be used by the teachers and students! Teachers will model the use of the balance to solve addition and subtraction balanced equations and students will explore and use these math tools to understand what it means to balance an equation to make both sides equal. The balances will be used by all first graders in small groups and stations as a way to learn about equations that can have two addends on both sides of the equal sign.
Although this is a difficult concept for first graders, these tools give them a hands on approach and a visual to support their learning.
Students also need the math splat subtraction to help build fluency and target math game to help with fluency.
