Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We call our classroom the Robot Studio. My students are all emerging bilinguals with an insatiable appetite for learning and creative projects. We are engineers, mathematicians, researchers, readers, writers, and creative artists who LOVE hands-on learning and snuggling up with a good book.

Too many of my students do not have access to extracurricular activities.

It is essential that our school provide students and their parents opportunities to explore different sports and hobbies.

Our goal in the 2016-2017 school year is to establish extracurricular clubs that are open to students and their parents. Possible clubs include: LEGO club for future engineers and architects; Video Game Design Club for future programmers; Yoga Club for chilling out and focusing; Science Club for kids who love experiments; and a DYI club for kids and parents who love to recycle, repurpose, and upcycle.

My Project

The research is just as clear as it is devastating: children who live in chronically stressful environments experience multiple negative cognitive effects: reduced attention span, memory issues, and deficiencies in executive function to name but a few. Among the key stressors that lead to such struggles are living in poverty, ongoing exposure to violence, and unsafe living conditions.

The majority of students in our Title I school are living in chronically stressful conditions and it is imperative that we do all we can to mitigate the impact of that stress.

To this end, our school would like to establish a parent-child Yoga Club that will teach participants strategies to build strength, flexibility, and balance so they are better able to cope with the struggles life throws their way. My students need 20 Fitness Gear 3mm fitness mats.
