My Students
We are a high needs school in Harlem, with many students living below the poverty line or coming from low-income families. Some live in shelters. The majority receive free school lunch based on their socio-economic status. Many are from single parent households.
We have a special program for students on the autism spectrum, who benefit from reduced class size and additional supports in the classroom.
I teach these students several times per week to provide consistency in their schedules. They tend to struggle with core strength and balance but have improved greatly in the time I have worked with them.
My students are energetic and enthusiastic dancers. They are eager to explore new ideas and dance forms.
My Project
Students on the autism spectrum thrive with tactile and experiential learning. I am requesting balance pods. Students will use the balance pods to improve core stability and muscle tone. The bumpy texture of the pods provides stimulating tactile sensation on students' feet.
We will use the balance pods as part of a dance "obstacle course" with different movement activity stations in the dance room.
We will also use them as a trail to follow, exploring pathways through the space. And I'm sure my students will think of many additional activity ideas...
These balance pods will benefit students in my Pre-K through 2nd grades especially, but I can envision using them for 3rd through 5th grades for balance challenges.
