The research has spoken, students are not getting as much movement as they used to. It is hard for children. 5 and 6 years old, to sit still and listen to a teacher all day. This year I am making it my mission to promote physical movement while my students are learning.
My students are learning English as a second language.
They are high poverty students who are just learning their letters, sounds, crucial vocabulary and basic words in English. Most are immigrants or children of immigrants, that are eagerly learning English as they attend their local elementary school, a Title I school, for the first time.
My Project
I am asking for funds to purchase Hooki stools for my ELL classroom. Children in my class will use the Hokki stools as they are reading and writing. They will be able to "move even when they seem to be sitting still." I see between 35 to 45 students a day in small groups. I would love to provide an opportunity for them to learn and move simultaneously by using these stools. "The HOKKI is an ergonomic stool with a convex base that allows movement -rocking, twisting and turning- which is critical to student development and well-being."
My students are at a crucial age, 5 & 6, developing important muscles and a strong sense of balance.
By providing my students with an opportunity to move as they are learning I hope to increase my students concentration for the materials I am teaching and a physical well being.
