Help Mrs. Braswell

I teach a lab based, hands-on Environmental Science course in a rural area of Winston-Salem, NC. My classes are 11th and 12th graders needing the class for a graduation requirement. Ever since I started teaching (14 years ago) my students have been using outdated scales or balances that are not found in any college or in any science related workplace because they are so outdated. My request is for 4 electronic balances. Colleges use these type of balances, science labs, hospitals, and medical offices also use these balances. My classes are always overloaded with usually 32 students. In lab groups of 4 we would use these balances throughout the course to mass chemicals accurately, various objects will be massed in our specific heat lab, different fuels will also be massed when we compare renewable and nonrenewable fuels and plants will also be massed when we complete our lab on the effects of fertilizers. The balances we use now for our labs are not only outdated but very inaccurate. I think that my students should have access to balances that will be used after high school, not balances that are obsolete in the "real" world. Funding is the sole reason we do not have access to these balances as they are very expensive. If students could utilize these balances it would prepare them for college and future job opportunities. My students are inquisitive and eager to learn, I believe they deserve the opportunity to use these needed balances.
