This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Many live in a single parent or grandparent household where that parent/grandparent works to provide for the family on a tight budget that supplies the necessities. They attend a K-8 elementary school in a tough neighborhood. The students are in sixth grade, which is a critical year for many of them, because they struggle with wanting to be independent and needing guidance. As if this struggle was not enough to deal with they are exposed to the reality of poverty and crime on a daily basis. They want to succeed and to compete on a level playing field with their peers. The needs are great but they are willing to work hard.
Our administrator has given the school a new lease on life, she believes in them and as a result they believe in themselves.
But we need help to make our dreams a reality.
My Project
The Gaiam Balance Ball Chairs will be used in our classroom on a rotating basis to keep students active and engaged during lessons. Studies show that sitting for 5 to 6 hours a day over a long period of time can lead to a range of health problems. The balance balls will help to improve my students core strength. In addition to their core they will be actively moving and bouncing which will increase the amount of physical activity throughout the school day.
This project will help my students to make fitness a part of their daily routine.
When they make fitness a part of their routine hey will be more likely to maintain it throughout their lives. Active students are able to focus better in the classroom which will improve their academics.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
