My Students

A whole bunch of fractions on p.185 in a math text book isn't a guarantee that kids are going to know what the denominator and the numerator are and what the heck we need them for. But, we can warm up to 3/4 cup sugar mixed with 2 1/2 cups flour and sprinkled with 1/3 cup brown sugar.

The students in my fifth grade class are energetic, cheerful, and positive.

They are often below grade level and struggle greatly in reading. They also have difficulty in math, particularly with multiplication and ideas like fractions. For some reason, these concepts seem abstract and difficult to master.

My Project

I know that having a Kitchen Aid mixer is a great way to incorporate fractions into the daily lives of our students. I have brought my own mixer from home over the last ten years to give kids hands-on experiences with fractions that result in a better understanding of these math concepts while giving them a tangible reward in return. Adding 1/4 cup brown sugar to 1/2 cup white sugar and learning that the total is 3/4 cup sugar is valuable. This is something my students will learn to do with greater ease.

Our students come to school with background knowledge to contribute.

Making and baking with a Kitchen Aid mixer are great ways to teach kids about fractions. I will use it to help them develop a larger foundation upon which to move forward. We teachers are trying to help them connect their own lives - past, present, and future - to what we are trying to teach them.
