BAHS Safe Space and Group Therapy Room

My Project

The requested items will make a difference in learning by providing a nurturing and fostering environment where students feel the freedom to make mistakes without lasting judgment or ridicule. They can engage in critical, honest, civil, and challenging discussions about sensitive topics. Students can also practice speaking aloud and engagement skills which will boost their confidence in the classroom. Students will feel comfortable and safe. They are more likely to report instances of bullying or threatening behavior to teachers/counselors because students will feel that teachers/counselors are trusted adults. This can improve the overall culture of the school by making it safer for everyone

The goals for this project are to support struggling students and provide a reliable environment where students know they can receive help.

Another goal is to create a safer school community and to make students feel more confident.

My students are over-aged and under credited high school students who come from various backgrounds. The student population is comprised of teen parents, students who were formerly incarcerated, on probation, students who have parents who are incarcerated, students who struggle with substance abuse, students who are in temporary housing, students in foster care, students with learning challenges and mental health issues. My students are special because despite the above-mentioned challenges, they persevere. They graduate high school, and they achieve their post-secondary goals. The students often times do not receive encouragement or support at home. The school community does our best to provide it for them.
