My Students

I have been teaching English (literature and writing) in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over ten years. My students inspire me every day and I try to inspire them to learn and grow. Most of my students are from South America and come from diverse indigenous backgrounds. My students are creative and full of potential. Given access to materials and opportunities, they can grow and blossom as critical thinkers and compassionate people. My students are the future of the planet!

My Project

I am an English teacher in Los Angeles Unified School District and teach 11th grade American Literature and Composition and 12th grade Expository Reading and Writing. As part of our unit on Native American Literature, my students read Bad Indians by Deborah Miranda. However, I only have a class set so my students can only read in class and that limits their ability to take the book home to study and read and re-read passages as necessary. I would like to have more books available so that I could assign the book for students to take home and they would have an opportunity to read the book over the weekend, too. Bad Indians by Deborah Miranda has made a huge difference in my students' learning and growth last year. After reading their powerful essays, I could see how transformational the book was in my students' understanding of the mission system here in Southern California and how the mission system affected the indigenous Tongva tribe and other tribes in the area. My students realized that they are finally learning the true history of the land that they live on. Many of my students had to do the 4th grade mission project and thought that the Native Americans happily worked in the missions and that the missions benefited the indigenous people. They did not know about the physical and cultural genocide that were a result of the mission system. This is especially relevant since the San Fernando Mission is nearby our school and my students did not know its true history until after reading the book. Bad Indians by Deborah Miranda is an important book for my students and I would greatly appreciate support in getting more copies of the book for my students. With deepest gratitude... Ms. Chuc
