We serve students with various disabilities, primarily in the area of autism or mental health. Our students work hard. They love to explore and learn. We know that the best way to ensure that our students are successful, engaged learners is to provide hands-on learning opportunities. Additionally, we emphasize group learning opportunities so that they have the opportunity for the social-emotional learning so many of them need.
By introducing various animals into our classroom (fish, a bearded dragon, and hermit crabs) we have seen an increase in their curiosity about the the care the animals need and an improvement in their attention and commitment to the needs of these dependent pets.
Their teamwork to ensure they take good care of these animals has been an area of growth for all of them.
My Project
Our students have been learning about the care of various pets in our classroom including fish, reptiles, and crustaceans. Each animal we have is unique in its diet, habitat, and care needs. Our group of special education students is ready to add birds to their skill set and enjoy the benefits of supplementing our vegetable garden project to enhance our farm to table classroom experience.
Animal care and cooking are two big parts of our daily program and laying hens will be a wonderful addition.
Our requests provide everything we need to raise chicks as well as a habitat for them when they are grown and ready to be part of our farmyard here at school.
