Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school community is rural, heavily weighted with 79.8% low socioeconomic status.

A safe learning environment is essential for students of all ages.

Without it, they are unable to focus on learning the skills needed for a successful education and future.

Our students - Student ethnicity is 55.5% Hispanic, 37.9% White, 4.3% African American and 2.2% two or more races. There are 3.8% of students for whom English is a second language. Our mobility rate is 25.3%. We also service 10% of students who come from Children’s Home of Lubbock and Texas Boys Ranch.

Research continues to illustrate children who feel unsafe at school perform worse academically and are more at risk.

My Project

My goal is to provide essentials for safety and comfort for students and teachers during the potentially traumatic experience of an emergency situation: tornados, severe weather threats, active shooter, fire and bomb threats. We train routinely for the following: shelter in place, lockouts, lockdowns, evacuations, and reunification. Having a properly supplied backpack for every teacher in the school will help meet the needs of our students and teachers and assure our community that we are prepared to take care of their children under any stressful and frightening situation.

We would like to have backpacks for each teacher which will contain a basic first aid kit, flashlight, emergency clipboard, sticky notes, and pens.

We can formulate habits of teachers carrying these backpacks with them throughout a school day so that they will always be prepared to take care of their students in a moment's notice. With these backpacks, student safety and teacher preparedness would be at a maximum.

I have volunteered to put together the 50 backpacks for our faculty members in case of an emergency. Thank you for your support in advance.
