My Students

Our school is in an urban area of Queens, New York, a melting pot of ethnic diversity. Our students come from many different countries whose families are eager to prosper here in the United States. Many are from the West Indies, South America and India whose families encourage respect and a strong work ethic.

We have done a lot to build up a strong science program in the school, investing in equipment that few schools in the area have.

We have also become a Magnet school with a STEM component. Through these investments in our students, they have shown a greater ability to think, create, problem-solve, and succeed. The parents and teachers work hard to foster strong connections so everyone will be involved in the education system. It is a school that really shines a light on what makes our country so great and our students are an example of what the future needs.

My Project

During the Covid Pandemic, a lot of our students have had to spend their time remote learning and disconnecting from nature. When they return in the fall, I want to give them an immersive experience in the importance of taking care of the world around us, emphasizing the role that climate change has in determining our future on this planet and how we, as student scientists, can work to nurture the environment around us and take personal responsibility in its future success.

The students will be growing native plants in our urban environment and taking care of them each step of the way.
