This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher. I teach second grade at a Title I public school in the Bronx, New York. My school is near and dear to me because it is my alma mater. It gives me great fulfillment and joy to serve in the very same community that I attended school. It warms my heart to serve and give back to my community. I teach a program called Horizon. The Horizon program is tailored to proving specialized academic and social-emotional learning to students on the autism spectrum. My students are amazingly unique, enthusiastic learners and they have a creative imagination.

My Project

The use of dry erase boards is a daily activity in my classroom. When teaching a core subject, many times I ask my students to write their responses and solutions on their dry erase boards. It is an effective way of doing an informal assessment to see where the students are at during instruction. The students find joy in writing on their dry erase boards and using dry erase markers. It is a fun and engaging tool that they love using in the classroom. It gives them a feeling of autonomy.

This school year will be a "NEW" look.

Students have been out of school for months, therefore adjustments will need to be made to the curriculum to ensure students feel that they are in a safe, supportive, and empowering setting. I am requesting social-emotional learning books to help my students feel they are connected to their teacher, peers, and school community. Books that focus on growth mindset and mindfulness are wonderful in supporting students' social-emotional intelligence. Also, I am requesting a gift card from teachers pay teachers because it will be helpful to receive resources, lesson plans, and guides needed to teach students.

Lastly, the rest of the materials I requested are supplies needed in the classroom to promote a welcoming and clean environment. Such as bulletin board paper. borders, book bins, pens, certificates, and nameplates. As well as, Clorox wipes, disinfectant spray to make sure the classroom is as clean and germ-free as possible!
