This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am looking forward to another amazing year teaching second grade! My classroom is a place where my students learn how to become leaders and take ownership over their learning.

I teach at a Title I school in a Turn Around Zone in Nevada.

Our county is the 5th largest district in the country, yet has one of the lowest per pupil spending budgets. Nevada spends $8,454 per student, which is about $3,000 less than the national average and ranks 49th nationally. The overall public education system of Nevada is ranked 50th and it is 48th in overall child well being. My school offers free breakfast to 100% of students and 80% of students are eligible for free/reduced price lunch.

My Project

These materials will benefit the students by helping to create a space that is organized and productive for learning. Students will be able to demonstrate learning on the white boards. For example, when solving a problem students can write their answer on their board and hold it up for me to see. I will be able to quickly see which students need more support and then address their needs. I believe that giving students a choice in where they work engages them more in the activity and creates higher achievement. Giving the students clipboards to work in different spaces around the room will give them this opportunity. We will also be able to take our learning to other parts of the school such as outside or collaborate with another class. Having an organized space for materials is important to save transition time. The bins would provide this organization and make it easier for students to choose books to read. Finally, a new pencil sharpener would save so much learning time for students.
