Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a large urban area where the majority of my students are part of the free lunch program and come from low socio-economic home environments. Having money for food and other household expenses takes priority over buying learning games, books, or technology. This is my Kindergarten students' first school experience. I want them to develop a love for reading and learning, and depending on the pandemic, I may be teaching in person or virtually.

Due to the pandemic, many of my students did not attend pre-school or did so virtually, so I need many resources to help them in reading and writing that will be engaging.

Every year, my Kindergarten students always come excited to class, and this year they may be more apprehensive. I want them to feel safe and have a positive mindset to begin learning the love of reading and writing.

My Project

This coming new year will be in person, but my Kindergarten students will still need to follow Covid guidelines. Since they will not be able to share or use the same items, they will need their own whiteboards and manipulatives. To minimize the exchange of papers, it will help for them to have their own journals. Having journals for the whole year will be a great keepsake for parents at the end of the year as well.

If all students have their own whiteboard, marker, and manipulatives, it will make whole group activities more engaging and interactive.

These items can be used in all academic areas during whole group, small group, and independent activities. These resources are basic needs in any Kindergarten classroom. Not only will they help in their learning, but they can help keep everyone safe and healthy by everyone using their own supplies.
