Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you supply children with the tools they need to work with their minds and creativity, you supply them with a great education! My students struggle to afford many things, including the school supplies they need to start the school year off on the right foot!

I am currently a middle school grade English Language Arts teacher for special education students.

I teach in a high needs New York City middle school. The focus of my classroom is to create life-long learners. My students are English Language Learners and also have very diverse needs due to their disabilities. My classroom would benefit from basic supplies to start the school year off. The majority of the students in my school are struggling financially. Some of our students even reside in shelters. Most students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Often times, the students come without the necessary materials to succeed in school. My school has lost money in the recent budget cuts and teachers are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they require to begin the school year stocked with the supplies students need to be successful every day.

My Project

My special education students work best when they use their creativity. Pencils, scissors, markers, and crayons will stimulate my students to use their creativity on each assignments. They will be able to express themselves in a creative manner while building their motor skills. Many of my students are visual and tactile learners. The use of color attracts not only their eyes, but their minds as well. Having these supplies in the beginning of the year will allow them and their families to avoid the struggle and to ensure they have the basic school supplies needed for September. These are items that are staples in every classroom. School supplies are essential for student learning.

My students would benefit greatly from these essential, basic school supplies.

They will be much more interested and excited to learn. They will be able to work hands-on to improve their skills and use their creative minds. They will not become frustrated or disengaged because the work would be colorful and creative. These diverse students will be able to grow with this spark for learning!
