My Students

My students are a culturally diverse group of ninth graders living in a high poverty area. About half of my students are special education students, and many are struggle with reading and writing. Despite any challenges they face, they are optimistic about their futures and work hard to accomplish their goals. With the right resources, all students are excited to succeed.

My Project

Being virtual most of the year last year was difficult on students. Although they are used to screens, their screen time increased drastically, and for many students, that caused eye strain and headaches. After being out of the classroom for so long, sitting in the fluorescent lights of a classroom is also challenging. Providing students with classroom space with fluorescent light cover diffusers will hopefully alleviate some of those headaches and eliminate awkward glares on their computer screens.

This year, students will be learning how to annotate to become better readers and critical thinkers, but they need supplies to help learn the process.

I'm requesting sets of color pencils to help teach students how to annotate difficult texts by color coding different aspects of what we are reading.

I have also requested a computer mouse. I often have students with dexterity issues who struggle to use the track pad on the school issued computers. That can lead to frustration. Having a spare mouse in class will be helpful if a student is struggling.
