This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every classroom needs the basic supplies to start the school year off right. Many of these items are used so quickly that we run out before the winter even arrives. Having the basics like pencils, paper, pencil grips is so important.

My class is a class of 25 kindergartners with unique personalities and varying academic levels ranging from kindergarten to second grade.

We are a kindergarten ICT class, 40% special education students and 60% regular education students. My students are part of a larger school community of about 700 students. Compared to other New York City Schools, we are much smaller. While our small size has a lot of pros there are also many cons; one being the lack of space that our school has along with a smaller budget. While we try to use our budget wisely providing a great number of resources for our students, we often do not have many of the things that we need to help all our students be successful.

My Project

These resources will be used every day by the students. The folders will hold their papers, homework and important notices. They will help to make communication between the parents and the teachers much clearer. The pencils, crayons, and dry erase markers are tools that the students use daily for various lessons. The pencil grips will be used for those students who receive Occupational Therapy and need support with their writing. The plastic prong folder will be used to hold their sight word lists, they are an easy way to add new lists as the kids master the previous one.

Giving the students basic supplies will ensure that all of the students in my class have an equal start and have the supplies and materials that they need to learn to the best of their abilities.

In the past we have given students 3-4 different folders a night to take home containing homework, notices, art projects and much more. There are so many folders, many times some are lost along the way, or simply misplaced. We are hoping that having one folder will teach the kids how to organize their papers and in turn lose less. It's all about helping kids be successful in every way they can be!
