My Students

We are a high poverty school in the midst of apartments and single-family homes. More than half of the students are from low-income homes and they receive free or reduced-price lunches. I have a diverse group of students from many ethnic background.

I have twenty four rambunctious and curious five year old kindergarten students in my class.

Many have not had the preschool experiences of being in a classroom setting learning to listen to directions. Good character building skills like responsibility, respectfulness, and staying safe are concepts taught throughout the year.

My Project

It's the beginning of a school year and we are all excited to meet our brand new friends. A key to successful class is reducing behavior problems and increase positive classroom climate. Team building games, activities and songs are very important in providing a safe, and positive learning zone for kindergarten students.

For team building activities, I would like make up songs and chants during circle time by using the piano keyboard.

Chants and up beat music lessons will incorporate character building skills that will make learning fun. Rewards and stickers always go hand in hand in promoting positive behaviors in class.

A personal space to calm down is also important for a young student. Therefore, I would like to provide my students with a small "Calm Down" carpet in the corner of my classroom with large stuffed animal that students can hug and calm their bodies.
