Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in New York, near Yankee Stadium. The students in our school come from many different cultural backgrounds and diverse learning styles. My students have me for mathematics for 100 minutes daily. During this time we go beyond just learning an algorithm; my students are engaged in mathematical discussion within student groups and whole class discussion which focuses on mathematical reasoning.

These 5th graders are amazing as they daily persevere as mathematicians.

My students demonstrate this with collaboration within student groups as they support each other's learning during a lesson. They have learned to support each other with the use of manipulatives and models which allows access for all learners!

My Project

Basic materials are essential not only to learning, but students having confidence to persevere to learn. Our students demonstrate our Core Value of "I never give up!" on a daily basis, but at times it is challenging when their pencils do not sharpen correctly or break frequently due to the poor quality of the pencil leading to frustration and shutdown. With students equipped with quality supplies such as pencils, they will be able to have their mindset on learning and preparing themselves to be college and career ready!

Same can be said about copy paper, which is a vital resource of our curriculum.

In order for our students to engage in rigorous tasks, we need to print them from our computer. This permits our students not only to be challenged with independent and group tasks, but an opportunity to show their thinking and explain their thinking in words. Students demonstrate our Core Value of "I am a team member!" as this work is shared with their peers to assist them in other ways to solve tasks.

As the school year progresses, our classroom walls become a mosaic of student "Big Ideas". Having these "Big Ideas" displayed in our classroom allows for students to reference them throughout the school year as well as to develop more big ideas based on previous taught concepts. Our students enjoy having these ideas posted knowing that they generated them and understanding that these ideas can be edited throughout the year as well!
