My Students

I teach at a public, Title I Impact school in Savannah- Chatham County. My school currently has 90% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. The word impact by definition means to "have a strong effect on someone or something." As a teacher, this is my goal each day: to make the greatest positive impact on my students.

My students come from very diverse backgrounds.

My school is certified for English Language Learners that have recently moved to this country. The students come from many different countries around the world. Most of our ESOL students were forced to leave their country of origin because of war, persecution, and/ or extreme poverty. Often times, these children come to us traumatized and find it difficult to adjust to their new surroundings. They are completely unfamiliar with the language and social norms of our country. Despite their plight, these children are expected to perform academically.

Regardless of being from a different country, a single-parent home, or a poverty-stricken neighborhood, my students are bright, energetic, and loving. My hope is to make the greatest impact on my students by offering them a safe and positive learning environment.

My Project

Each year, teachers struggle with the lack of basic supplies needed to effectively teach students each day. It is crucial to have certain resources to keep our students healthy and happy in their learning environment. We can all agree that there is an issue with budget allocation in our school systems, but the students should not suffer. We must invest in our future generations.

Attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed academically when they are consistently involved in daily lessons and routines.

Supplies like hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray, paper towels, and cleansing wipes help to create a healthy learning environment for the 620 students that pass through my door each week.

Unfortunately, teachers struggle to maintain a supply of essential materials needed to enhance daily learning objectives. Materials like pencils, markers, and paper are valued resources that are regularly supplemented by the teacher. In fact, teachers typically deplete their entire stock of supplies before the winter break at the end of December. I have included supplies on my list that include materials for student-created projects because I believe that students should learn through other means that do not involve a worksheet. Project-based learning helps me reach my diverse group of students by giving them the opportunity to solve real-world problems through hands-on activities.
