My Students

Using a dictionary and a calculator are two basic skills that every student should have at his or her fingertips. My students currently have to share these resources in my classroom, wasting valuable instructional time. We need enough dictionaries and calculators for each student to have one.

We are two teachers who co-teach 5th grade at a diverse Title 1 school in Hawaii.

Students come from all over the island to attend our mindful school, where students learn Habits of the Mind. Our students have a wide range of interests, needs, and abilities. They love working together, reading, playing tag, using the computer, and dancing.

My Project

We are asking for 20 dictionaries and 20 calculators. With these new resources, our students will be able to gain independence and confidence by being able to look up words and make calculations on their own. They won't have to wait in line to share the few outdated dictionaries and broken calculators that we currently have in our classroom. Our students love to read both non-fiction articles and exciting fiction stories, and often need to turn to a dictionary to learn about new vocabulary words. They also need dictionaries to complete their daily vocabulary and spelling homework. In math, students are learning to convert fractions into decimals. With their own calculators, they will be able to convert fractions into decimals with ease and confidence. They can also use their new calculators to check their math work.

With their new dictionaries and calculators, they will gain valuable skills that they will carry with them on their journey of life long learning.
