My Students

In the city of Newark, many students live below the poverty line. Some cannot even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school in unkempt manners. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.

At this time in the school year, students are quarantined under the stay-at-home order in this Corona Virus and cannot go to school until the pandemic is over.

We have begun to engage them outside of the classroom with multiple social media platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Screen Castify, Google Docs, and Google Meetings. l am able to connect with them in spite of their physical attendance. Many of my students are members of the Football Team. I am involved in them beyond the classroom by involving them in positive social change, community service activities, and extracurricular activities. We also want them to learn the importance of serving their community.

My Project

My project is entitled Back Better. Readers are leaders. Writers are fighters. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! Your support will help the Writer's Workshop process run smoothly from day today. The notebooks will be used to create journal logs and short responses to developmental and conceptualization writing sessions that reflect the discussions we have during our mini-lessons.

The donations will help to improve my students' chances to come back better with tools to support their understanding of and competency in authentic, meaningful writing!

By implementing the Writer's Workshop model, my students will begin to see themselves as true authors and illustrators. We will use these materials to aid us in the process of becoming life-long writers. As the teacher, I have done extensive research and reading on Writer's Workshop in the primary grades. Yet I truly need your support to make this a reality. Thanks! Students can overcome that hurdle of not having funds to purchase school supplies such as notebooks and writing tools for every class. Students will write essays and brush up on their writing skills.
