Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In our school attendance area (Lone Oak Elementary, a Title I school in Spartanburg, South Carolina), the children are very lovable and have great attitudes towards learning; however, many of them just do not have the social skills to carry them into a successful life. They do not know how to deal with any kind of conflict resolution. In my first grade classroom, I strive to begin teaching the right way to deal with conflict, how to love and help their neighbor, how to share, how to be giving, etc. Over the years I have been teaching, I have noticed that books teach children lessons about character, how they should act in difficult situations, etc. in a way that telling them just cannot. They truly make a great influence on every child. A specific set of books that I have noticed that makes a great influence on children is the Berenstain Bears. These books illustrate a family with struggles and model how children should respond to a variety of situations - anything from why not to lie to how to treat those who are different from you. I have some of these books, but it would be great to have an entire classroom library of the Berenstain Bear collection. These books are so valuable in teaching children how to deal with whatever situation that may arise. They teach such concepts as kindness, honesty, sharing, caring, respectfulness, tolerance, and cooperation. I want my children to have these books in the class so that their knowledge and social abilities will flourish and so that they may have a great chance of becoming a child, and even an adult, of character. Almost all of these books can be integrated into the first grade math, science, and writing curriculum as well.
