About My Students

I'm so excited for my students to start this project! This groups of students are beyond ready to start hatching their baby ducks!

I teach at a wildlife conservation centered high school. My students are longing for more hands on conservation and wildlife experience. Things that are hard for us to accomplish in the urban setting out school is positioned in. We thought about things we could do and hatching ducks was the perfect solution.

In working on this project my students are going to develop many skills. The main one being empathy for the creatures who reside in the world around them. In doing this my students are going to be learning and incredible amount of responsibility. They will utilize the calendar to keep track of our ducks progress inside their eggs as they will also be able to cross reference it with the model egg.

In Their Own Words

Though this project we want to hatch ducks so that we can see wildlife in action. This project will also allow use to learn first hand what happens in nature while in the classroom.

We will really have to become leaders in working on this project. There is a lot to manage when hatching ducks. We will have to first candle the eggs when we get them to check for cracks, and fix those that have them with beeswax. We will also need to keep tabs on the temperature to make sure they do not get to hot or cold while they are in the incubator.

This project is really important to not only us but also our school community. We go to school in an extremely urban area where we have little contact with nature. This project will allow us to being nature and hands on wildlife experiences right into our classroom!
