My Project

Most of my students live in Public Housing where having books is not a priority when money for food, clothing and utilities are often lacking. The goals of this project are learning to read and sharing that reading while strengthening family bonds.

I would like for each of my students to take home copies of the book series, Amazing Affirmations.

These books will go home with students and remain there for parents to read to their children, resulting in several benefits: Exposure to books contributes to an understanding of print concepts (ex.left to right, top to bottom, sequencing); Listening to stories assists in the development of literacy skills and language development; Looking at pictures in books helps readers to develop an appreciation of both art and writing.

Giving these Amazing Affirmations books to my students to keep at home will afford a time for parents to bond with their children. This home reading will offer a quiet time in the often hectic lives of both parents and their youngsters.

The book series is written to develop social and emotional learning (SEL). One of the stories in the series, for example, ”I Love My Curly Hair,” will help my children learn self-acceptance and will empower them to overcome obstacles. The main character in the story, Tamara, accepts herself, and her curly hair. Using Tamara as a role model, I would like my children to learn to love themselves.

Here is what Tamara says about her hair:

“I love my curly hair

And the way it makes me feel inside!

I can walk around confidently

And flip my hair with pride.”
