Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students all have an immigration story from Latin America to tell. However, most of my students have little to no connection to their indigenous roots. Throughout the course, students begin to discover the indigenous languages, recipes, and traditions passed on by their family members. This class gives us the opportunity to showcase the indigenous dances, songs and clothing of Latin America.

Help us obtain the tools needed for students to create their own indigenous cultural regalia.

Students will learn to sew their own clothing, and will learn the meaning behind the symbols used on their clothing. Throughout this process, students learn philosophy, symbolism, history, geography and language.

Most of all, students get a taste of indigenous music and dance, and have the opportunity to perform for their community. In a community with scarce performing arts resources, this class has a huge impact on their lives.
