This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine not having access to books in the language that you hear at home...

My first graders are mostly of Mexican background.

Whether they were born here, or immigrated from Mexico, they all come from low-income backgrounds. Their families are not able to make a trip to their local bookstore and purchase books for them to read at home, let alone books in 2 languages. They are incredibly bright; learning a new language and learning how to read at the same time is not an easy task!

My Project

Currently, our library houses books of different genres in English only. I have always told my students to be proud of who they are and where they come from. However, I am not able to read to them in their native language because we do not have books in Spanish in our classroom. Even more important, the only way that their parents can read with them is with books in Spanish.

One of the best tools a person can have is to speak more than one language.

By providing us with books in Spanish, I can continue to nurture their bilingualism. They will also be able to read together with their parents at home.
