My Students

I teach art to the entirety of a small Ward 8 school, ages 3-12. My students are curious, bright, and amazing problem solvers who are always excited to learn. They love to create and express themselves with their artwork. They're passionate and opinionated about the art work they view, and teach me things every day.

The genuine joy I witness when students try a new material or technique has been the most rewarding part of working with these students.

I hope to continue to expose them to different types of exciting art, and promote a positive outlet for them with art.

My Project

We are three months into the school year, and I am beginning to run low on some essential materials for my students. This school loves art class, and students come eager and ready to experience new materials. With this project I will be able to create more diverse lessons and provide my students with a more well-rounded idea of what the subject of visual art is all about.

My students deserve the same artistic experiences that other elementary schools around the country receive.

These supplies will not only enhance their learning, but keep them excited and hopeful about how art can help them throughout their lives. One of the main things I am hoping to gain from materials like the caddies, wipes, and mounting tape is to maintain organization within my room. Currently, I do not have enough containers to hold some of the art supplies, and the wipes provided to me by the school do not get messes off of my table. A lot of my posters of art work keep falling off the wall due to only having access to painter's tape. All three of these items would enhance the overall environment of my art class.

I will soon be moving on to a portrait unit with my younger students (K-2), which is part of their D.C. scope and sequence. Items like different skin toned paper, markers, and paint will allow students to see themselves within their work more clearly. An obstacle I've run into is not having enough quality brushes for the whole class to use at the same time, so the brushes will be extremely useful. Lastly, the pompoms and wiggly eyes will mainly be utilized by my pre-schoolers, as I did not have access to these materials before.
