My Students

My students are high school Environmental Science students. We study the interactions between living things, non-living things and human activities. We learn though readings, notes, videos and labs. We like to explore the nearby woods, garden and creek as part of our curriculum. So many students in our school live in urban setting and have limited exposure to the outside world. It is very rewarding for me to help students understand the natural world and learn about how humans affect our environment and what steps we can take in the future to help reduce our impact on the environment.

I am proud of the many students who have been inspired by our class to pursue Environmental Studies in higher education.

Having experiences in class that help them see impacts of our actions on the environment is critical. It prepares them to be responsible citizens and understand some of the consequences their choices have on our environment. Some of these students will be the innovators who will find solutions to our environmental problems of the future.

My Project

Students love to interact with living things, even at the high school level. In our Environmental Science class we explore issues of water quality, food webs and chemical cycling. Having a living example of all of these things in the classroom will be a great hands-on addition to the readings, notes and videos we watch as we study these topics. The chemical test kits will allow students to track data daily and apply the concepts we learn to a real-life situation.

Learning to care for living things and trying to ensure a clean environment is a central theme of our class.

This aquarium will allow students to not only apply concepts learned in class but will also give them a sense of ownership of a small environment and the organisms inside. Students enjoy naming the organisms and feel a connection to living things are a result.
