My class is made up of 6 amazing and unique, 6th and 7th grade students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. But don't let the label of autism fool you, they are intelligent, creative, and inquisitive individuals. My students learn differently than neurotypical children, so they require a special learning environment. Help me to give my students an environment that is complimentary to their learning needs!
"There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what he cannot do" Dr. Temple GrandinWe are part of a larger school that is specifically designed for students with Autism and other related disabilities. Even though our school provides the basic essentials for our students, we need some other items to help encourage them to stay engaged in the activities in the classroom and enjoy coming to school. Most of my students have sensory sensitivities and they require my classroom to be adaptable to their needs to allow them to relax and be ready to learn. I would love to be able to give my students everything they need to be successful!
Each of my students learn in a different way and require different items to help aid in their learning. These items are important to make my students feel comfortable in my classroom. In addition to feeling comfortable, it is very important to keep my classroom organized for my students. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder require organization, structure, and predictability to thrive. The items on my list will help me give my students the ideal classroom to meet their needs, allow them to relax, and feel comfortable enough to focus on learning.
My students are able to give their all and stay engaged in learning when they are in an environment that is made just for them and tailored to fit their individual needs!
The most important thing to me in my teaching career is to leave my students with a sense of belonging while learning and for them to be given the chance to enjoy learning. Each item on my list will help me to provide my students with a classroom that they can look forward to coming to everyday and a classroom that gets them excited for learning!
