Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teachers read books to students daily written by amazing authors, but why not empower students to be outstanding authors themselves? My first grade class can't wait to be published writers!

My 30 first grade students are eager learners and love to come to school every day.

All of my students receive free lunch, and many of these children lack basic necessities at home. Over half of my students are English Language Learners, which makes learning academic language and practicing reading and writing in school even more important. Despite the obstacles my students face, they are respectful, hard-working, and dedicated to doing their best. One of my students' favorite times during the week is Friday Fun Time. During this time, students may choose a reading or math game or activity as a reward for great behavior. Many of my students beg to write during this time, but I only have some basic newsprint paper for them to write on.

My Project

How can you help? By providing the materials necessary for my students to create published writing pieces! I am requesting blank softcover and hardcover books formatted like the real, published books. Students can use these realistic templates to create fiction and nonfiction stories about themselves, the world around them, or anything they can image. Students will be excited to create meaningful stories to share with their classmates by reading their pieces aloud and placing them in our classroom library.

Your donation to this project will provide my first graders with the opportunity to create stories to be published that integrate literacy skills we practice daily, including planning pieces, using high frequency words, and writing for an audience.

Most importantly, however, these materials will promote a love of literacy through authentic writing opportunities. Who knows... You may be reading a New York Times Best Seller written by one of my students in the future!
