This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
At my school, our scholars receive a high-quality public education with a specific focus on social justice that aligns with the values and accomplishments of our school's name stake. Throughout the school year, our sixth graders read a collection of culturally relevant novels inclusive of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry," "Local News," "The Skin I'm In," "Tuck Everlasting," and "Inside Out & Back Again." They are exposed to award-winning literature and protagonists that are relatable and resemble them in ethnicity, age, and gender.
We value exposing our scholars to literature that is well-written, and thought-provoking, and that helps them understand the culturally relevant issues, challenges, and opportunities of our nation's past and present.
The Newberry Award-winning "Freewater" is a text that perfectly complements our curriculum. With a protagonist that faces and overcomes hardship, the text is another wonderful tale of the African Diaspora.
We hope to read the text with our sixth graders in the months that close out the school year as a supplemental novel. With this grade level set, we hope to inspire current and future 6th graders for years to come.
