Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you enter my classroom, you will see 24 inner-city kids who enjoy reading, reading, reading! This has been a great year for reading, but I want to take it to the next level with literature circles using a class set of a multicultural book.

My students are English Language Learners from Latino backgrounds.

They are caring, fun, and enthusiastic second graders who are thirsty for knowledge. Our school has access to some multicultural books in classrooms and in our school library but not class sets. Having access to award-winning, multicultural books will allow students to build their vocabulary and comprehension and make connections.

My Project

If my students are able to access a class sets of this award-winning multicultural book, Mango, Abuela, and Me, it will allow literature circles to come alive in my classroom. Usually when students read they are able to annotate, make connections, clarify and asks questions about the text with teacher support. Having these literature circles will allow students to improve their independent reading skills by doing these skills on their own. Students will support each other in their learning and thus become independent readers.

This project will allow my students to have a class set of quality books to read.

I selected this book because it will teach my students about celebrating their Latino culture and identify with the characters. This book will also teach them about connections, love, and transitions which many of my students will be able to relate to.
