Auxiliary Percussion: Anything but Auxiliary!

Help me give my students the appropriate rhythm section instruments to support our percussion ensemble and steel band. Auxiliary percussion instruments are anything but auxiliary- they define the genres that we play!

My Students

I teach two percussion ensemble classes with a total of 14 students, and then 4 steel drums classes with a total of 63 students. The steel drum ensemble has students at a variety of different levels, some who have played steel drums for 3 years, others who have never played a musical instrument. In the beginning of the year, many of my steel drum students were on suspension lists for behavior problems- now my most troubled class is playing grade 5 music (what a college steel band might play). I know that I could push them further if they felt that what they are doing was greatly supported by the community, and if the necessary rhythm section instruments were in good shape.

My Project

Many of the genres that we play are defined by instruments that we are missing or are in rough shape. For example, it is hard to play a cha-cha without a cha bell (named for the genre!), timbales, and congas. Auxiliary instruments are the MOST important for creating an authentic sound, and therefore respecting the traditions that the instruments come from.

Maybe even more importantly, some of the students that take my classes have never played a musical instrument before, and need to work on an instrument that is less overwhelming than a set of 6 pans.

A guiro, although requiring a technically nuanced approach, can teach simpler concepts at appropriate pacing- time, touch, feel. This year, class sizes were quite large- frankly too large for the number of instruments we have in good condition. We rehearse in a trailer that is very limited in size and can't add larger instruments for more players. Having cowbell players, conga players, and guira players will give students that are waiting for a turn to play steel drums something meaningful and authentic to learn.
