My Students

Pumpkins, gourds, fall leaves! In art class, this translates into an autumnal still life. First, the students will observe and sketch the objects. Then, they will do a watercolor of the still life. They will frame their work and give it a title to prepare it for the school art exhibition.

My students attend a public school in an urban area of New York.

We are in a culturally diverse neighborhood. The school is a high-performing Blue Ribbon school. The students score well on standardized tests but also are exposed to a rigorous visual arts program.

My Project

Students in grades 1-5 participate in classes with a visual arts teacher. They experience various genres of art including paint, watercolor, drawing, collage and sculpture. With these new watercolors, brushes, and mats the students will explore the medium of watercolor and create a seasonal still life.

Remember what it felt like to open new art supplies?

I teach over 300 students and supplies get used up quickly. Having a new set of watercolors and new brushes will help to inspire my students. In addition, the project will enable the students to observe and sketch first, to explore the use of watercolor and to create a successful still life.
