My Students
My students live in one of the densest and largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. and represent countries from all over the world. Their families have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic which has disrupted every aspect of their lives--home, school, play, outdoor activities, etc. The structure that school had provided for them is now gone. They no longer have routines to manage their days, peers to interact with, or outdoor spaces in which to play.
My students are autistic and receive tele-therapy services as part of their distance learning.
They normally receive special instruction in small classrooms, with related services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech. Many have difficulty attending for extended periods of time, and demonstrate sensory-seeking behaviors. They present with delays in strength, coordination, motor planning, etc. During tele-therapy sessions, it's vital to get and maintain their attention in order to work on developing their skills. This includes incorporating a lot of creative ideas and engaging activities, with resources limited to what I have at home or make myself.
My Project
These materials will help support my students as they continue to learn at home during their tele-therapy sessions. The hands-on approach to learning can never be underestimated.
Writing journals, sight word activities, and tactile letters are just some of the ways to help my students develop their writing skills.
My students are at different levels and learn at their own pace. Activities that are fun and engaging will allow them to participate more readily during our sessions. These resources will serve to motivate and encourage my students to keep learning at home.
