Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child.” - George Bernard Shaw. A typical day in my classroom, every experience is a learning opportunity. In which students learn how to communicate, socialize, and address their individual IEP goals.

My students have a diagnosis of Autism and have been placed in a 6:1:1 setting.

We are known as a Title I school in which our students come from low income neighborhoods. We are currently sharing a school with a middle school and elementary school. We are currently located on the third floor on top of the middle school. The classroom sizes are big, and the furniture is not enough to fill up the void. In our classroom, we have a mixed level of students, we have Early Learners and Intermediate Learners. Some of the students are Verbal with functional communication skills, others are verbal with minimal functional communication skills, and they are some who are non verbal. Each students has their own preference of likes and dislikes, and the rate of demand for each is very different. As different as my students are the one thing they have in common, is that as their teacher, I want nothing more to give them in the classroom, a level of independence and room to grow.

My Project

The kidney table will be used for small group instruction which occurs primarily throughout the day. The students can also use the table when sitting in front of the smart board, in which their is a physical barrier which reminds them about boundaries, which teaches them to sit down, when completing a task not only individually, one to one instruction, but in small group as well. The chairs are made to accompany the table. The puzzles will be used for all the students and made to differentiate activities for independent work as well as group work. The rug will be used, when the kids can participate in circle time on the rug. Where the students can greet one another in a whole group setting, sing songs, and do some gross motor activities.

These donations will have a positive impact in my classroom.

The large table along with the rug will reduce the physical space in the classroom and the students will transition from center to center without distractions. The students will have at least two more areas added to their individualized rotation schedule, which will make the learning process more purposeful learning and increase their socialization skills. The students will learn to work along side with someone and work with someone.
