Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher. I work with children who are on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. My group of kids is unique and special in many different ways. Before I begin talking about my kids, I would like to introduce my school. The school neighborhood isn't exactly kid-friendly but we as educators try our best to keep our students as safe as can be. Luckily, we have an amazing support staff. Without our administrators, we wouldn't be the team that we are! My students are part of the autism program at our school.

Each child is characterized by difficulties in behavior, social interaction, communication and sensory sensitivities.

These challenges that they experience lead to levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. All three students are unique and their needs are reflected differently. It is my job as their teacher to understand their individual needs and to be able to make appropriate accommodations for each student to help them become successful.

My Project

In our classroom we are particularly interested in helping our children learn to talk using an iPad. I would like to incorporate an iPad into our daily academic schedules. The iPad is a great way to help children develop language by using lots of pictures or photographs. There are specific apps that help children by speaking the words when the picture is being touched. We can also use the iPad for daily activities and routines. There are many different scheduling apps, as well as ones with visual supports. We will also use the iPad as a positive reinforcement and to encourage new skills. I will make sure I download apps that are fun and engaging for my students and their needs.

Computers have always provided excellent ways to facilitate learning and communication for children with autism.

Now, with the innovation of the iPad, children with autism have even greater opportunities to improve their communication, motor, and cognitive skills.
