My Students

Do you remember all the creative things you did as a child? Children learn as they explore their environment, but they may need some help along the way.

My students are autistic and range in age from 5 to 10 years old.

They receive special instruction in small classrooms, as well as related services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech. My students present with delays in strength, coordination, motor planning, etc. Many of them have poor fine-motor skills, which limit their independence in daily activities, such as dressing, writing, and playing. Many have difficulty attending for extended periods of time, and demonstrate sensory-seeking behaviors.

My Project

Helping to meet my students' fine-motor and sensory needs will allow them to have greater success within the school environment. Sensory processing problems are common among children with autism and these items will supplement the resources available in the classroom, in therapy, and when transitioning throughout the day. I have requested a variety of Play-Doh materials, including modeling compound, hand tools, and various toys which will help to develop my students' dexterity and improve their ability to function more independently with fine-motor tasks. As they squeeze, pull, pinch, and roll the Play-Doh, they are strengthening the small muscles in their hands, and at the same time having lots of fun!

My students will benefit from this project in so many ways.

They will learn how to use tools, increase their hand strength, develop their play skills, and expand upon their own creativity. These formative years hold so much promise for my students. Won't you help them reach their potential?
