My Students

"Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language." - Walt Disney My class loves Disney; not surprising considering that all my students have all been diagnosed with autism and are unable to verbally communicate.

My classroom consists of six beautiful, yet challenged, children.

The school is a special education setting primarily geared to students on the PPD spectrum. Students are grouped based on age, creating classrooms with immensely different learning levels. My students are at a second to third grade level with abilities ranging from young preschool to lower first grade. Their greatest challenge stems from their inability to communicate their wants and needs verbally or even non-verbally.

My Project

We are working on communication specifically face-to-face interaction, as well as sensory integration. Currently all of our work is done in standard rectangular tables, which does not allow all of my students to work together. Group projects are a great way for all to learn communication, and the kidney table will allow for proper peer interaction. With this specific project, I would like to create laminated mats with the students name, needs, etc (depending on their individual level) and allow them to use sensory items to either highlight or trace the objects. This project is not one-off, rather it will continue growing with the children as the mats and sensory materials are made more sophisticated.

As a teacher, the greatest gift I can give my students is helping them be more prepared to face the challenges of their future lives.

This and similar projects will help them enhance their communication abilities.
