My Students

My first graders have been introduced to letter sounds and sight words in kindergarten and are progressing towards the ultimate goal of reading independently. They come to school every day ready to work and look forward to new, meaningful experiences with good literature. I love to provide a plethora of hands-on activities to practice reading skills and to see the progress throughout the year. When I get to hear them read their first book aloud and witness the joy and pride on their young faces, I feel ecstatic in the knowledge that they are becoming successful readers!

My students are energetic, enthusiastic and ready to dive into learning!

I teach in a self-contained classroom in Paterson, New Jersey. Our inner city school district has a majority of students from low economic backgrounds. Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of these students express frustration with lack of books and supplies at home. They have limited opportunities with books to build their skills and interest. Keeping them motivated and excited about their future is the key! Providing everything that my students need to be successful in school is of the utmost importance to me!

My Project

Offering a collection of books by an author on a monthly basis gives students the chance to witness character development, familiar writing patterns and text features which can then be applied in a student's own writing. I have chosen authors Ezra Jack Keats, Peggy Parish and Robert Munsch whose bodies of work are first grade favorites and share rich vocabulary and strong themes.

Inspiring students to read with books that peak their interest levels is key for beginning readers.

I have selected writing books and colored pencils to motivate students to creatively respond to the books after reading and to motivate students to create their own text and illustrations using these great authors' examples.
