Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line.

My students have a lack of literacy support at home. Therefore, the literacy instruction at school has become very important. We are constantly trying to provide the students equal access to good writing instruction as are children from non-poverty families. As we all know, writing is directly connected to reading. Without good books as examples of good writing, it is very challenging to help my kids to become good writers. Just today, as I tried to show them we can use authors as our mentors, I felt saddened that I was unable to find the books to teach certain writing crafts. We were learning how to write five sentences that focus on one main idea. Most books I got from retired teachers are fairy tales, or patterned books that are not useful to teach small moments narrative writing.

I am asking for a selection of quality books to model good writing skills suggested by professionals in the field. I even obtained lesson plans for them as well. Ideally I could use one book per week to teach punctuation, topic generation, details, good leads and ends. Currently I use whatever book I can find, it is not very effective. It would be great if we have the right books in our classroom, so children can really have good examples to follow for learning writing. My students need a classroom set of good books for writing prompts or examples.

When these 6 year-olds receive those books, they will be eager to write thank-you letters to you! I can't wait to teach them how!
