My Students

My students are an eager group of young scholars working in a low-income area (Title I school). They are hard-working, enthusiastic, inquisitive students from a diverse array of backgrounds and cultures. They represent much of the best qualities of our country. I am very proud of each student, and would like to enhance their education by purchasing copies of this special book.

Even hard-working students can be overwhelmed by reading chapter books.

Getting them excited about reading can be a challenge. However, if you find a book that they can connect with, magic can happen. I believe that Dana Middleton's debut novel, The Infinity Year of Avalon James, is one of those books. It is a story about the power of friendship and truly captures the magical essence of childhood.

A recent KIRKUS REVIEW refers to this book as "a fine, tenderly nuanced tale of the remarkable power of friendship." The book addresses "painfully acquired life lessons" which convincingly illuminate many of the issues that can offer infinite possibilities to young people ... through actual magic ... or faith in the power of magic.

My Project

Dana Middleton's debut novel, The Infinity Year of Avalon James, is an exciting story about the challenges and magic of growing up. It captures important events in the lives of its protagonists in a meaningful way that is easily relatable to many young readers. It will capture the imagination of my students as they follow Avalon James' efforts to overcome some dicey situations, and make the best of these difficult circumstances. Overcoming these challenges, James provides a model for today's students.

Discovering this book before it is published has been very exciting.

Even better, the author has agreed to visit our school to participate in a discussion with our students! Having a copy of the book to read and discuss will make the experience more special. It will also give students the opportunity to ask text-based questions by referring to specific passages in the book. This activity will reinforce the Common Core standards taught at our grade level.

Reading The Infinity Year of Avalon James will be a driving force in our curriculum this year. Teachers at our grade level will be meeting to develop standards-based questions and activities based on this book. Of course, we need to have student copies of this book to make this exciting idea a reality!
