Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have a culturally diverse group of first grade students who are at-risk to gifted and talented. I teach all subject areas and this project will be used to teach across the curriculum. We work in flexible groups, and having an author come into the classroom will bring the class together to share a common experience. It will reach across all learning levels because of the content relativity and visuals the author will bring to my classroom. Our school was rated exemplary last year and I want my students to maintain the quality of rich learning experiences to stir their minds and heart to become risk-takers and life-long learners.

Because most of the parents are economically disadvantaged, our students lack exposure to events and personalities that can help motivate them to do explore their talents and take more ownership of their learning. This author is from the community and I want them to see the steps that were taken to make a dream a reality.

I would like each student to have an autographed copy of this author's book so that my class can read along. I will also invite parents to the class to read this book with their child. This project will also help parents to get involved with their children's education by experiencing this moment with their child.

You will make it possible for my students and their parents to have a wonderful, unforgettable experience of having personal contact with an author and her work. You will give them a physical reminder that they too can have a good life and it starts with this author's visit.
