Help Mrs. Lochel

First grade writers need the inspiration of this acclaimed professional and published author, Ezra Jack Keats, who has for decades entertained us with stories. I am currently teaching a group of 21 first grade students. We live in a great area of South Carolina and are fortunate to attend a neighborhood school where we are surrounded by a supportive community!

The main obstacle we face is finding inspiration for the children's writing. They can write about things they love or places they've been but it's all too safe. I want my students to be inspired and be brave enough in their composition to take chances and try new things.

The best way I know to show them how to do this is by providing the best possible examples: professional, published, richly crafted literature. By providing the children with this collection of books written by Keats, you will be providing for them opportunities to take chances in their writing and imitate the craft of this well known author. When students listen to these stories and read the books as writers would, they will begin to notice things that Keats has done in his writing to engage the reader even more.

Support these children in making intentional and purposeful decisions in their writing. Help them to learn from the best. By providing this collection of books, you will be making a difference in the quality of writing that these children will do each day.
