Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My second graders attend school in a growing community surrounded by fields of crops just outside Silicone Valley. Our school is diverse, and about half of the students are considered low-income. It's a great school with hard-working teachers, an involved Parent Club, and a principal who cares.

This year, we're trying to improve our school library by adding more diverse books and having an author of the month and a theme of the month.

Each month, we highlight a different author for an author's study. Many of our current collections of books are by older authors, and some of those books have seen better days! I want to highlight some diverse authors in addition to the more well-known authors like Eric Carle and Jan Brett.

I request a collection of Matt de la Pena's books at all reading levels. My 2nd graders will primarily benefit from picture books with characters that look like them. Since these books are for our school library, I've also requested chapter books for older readers. With these books, I can highlight a new author for students and allow them to read books with diverse characters.
